Fire Door held open

Did the person who placed this chair against the door realise that they have compromised the escape route from this care home? Should a fire start in this room then the fire & smoke would quickly spread to the adjacent corridor resulting in contamination of the area with smoke that is likely to render the corridor unusable, not a good idea when it is the only escape route!

Poor maintenance of equipment

The picture is of an emergency lighting unit that has been poorly repaired/maintained, amazing how a piece of fire safety equipment can turn into a fire hazard!

A fire waiting to happen

A fire in waiting

The electric heater shows a poor regard for how a fire could start, when asked about the unit the operator said "we don't use it in here, we only use it in the works for warming up materials" "so why is it plugged in" was the reply.....

There is always a good reason to hold open a fire dooor illegally

Fire door held open

One of the reasons for the rapid spread of fire within a building is that the fire doors are held open by devices or items that area not alarm activated, a fire door is designed to restrict the passage of smoke or fire into adjacent areas, in a lot of cases the adjacent area will be an escape route resulting in contamination of thearea from the effects of fire & smoke.
The fire & rescue service have the ability to prosecute for this behaviour, something that most people do not realise, of course what is usualy used to hold open the door - the fire extinguisher, don't take the risk!

Arson attack on Premier Inn

Arson attack Silverstone Premier Inn 2010

The week before the British Grand Prix 2010 the local premier inn was subject to an arson attack, the fire started at 9:45pm & was outside of the building (in the laundry cage awaiting collection), the hot gases & flames entered the eaves of the building allowing the fire to spread into the roof space.
The building was evacuated succesfully & 2 men were arrested on suspicion of arson, the biggest cause of fire within the UK.
